Cyanotype Workshop

  • Richmond Nature Park 11851 Westminster Highway Richmond, BC, V6X 1B4 Canada (map)

The final workshop will feature my favorite camera-less printing process, cyanotypes.
Pre-treated with the UV solution, participants will be invited to make up to 3 cyanotype compositions from subject matter found during our orientation and nature walk (similar to the other three workshops including session introductions to the history of the process, the organic approach of utilizing sunlight in printmaking, and ecological education segments in partnership with park naturalists).

Surrendering is paramount to embracing the uncontrolled processes of cyanotype making, and the group will be encouraged to use only found subject matter, in the present moment, to create these expressions. I aim to cultivate creative exploration of inspiration initiated within the ordinary. This could be in the simplest of forms such as leaves, rocks, or twigs found on the ground, as well as further use of inanimate objects like discarded pieces of litter. As these camera-less processes all render uncontrolled results, I invite participants to approach art-making in an intuitive way, without preconceived results. Surrendering is a paralleled theme and one I can speak closely to in my visual art practice. I will encourage the group to create at least one composition within this context, as well as I will bring my archive of pressed botanical specimens (foraged from the park in 2021 with a collection permit), for remaining prints if individuals wish to create traditional cyanotype prints.

During the hour-long exposure, we will deconstruct the session and dive into the social engagement aspects of the subject matter we chose to create with and why. The wash baths will finish the exposures, and each will be dried on a line with clothes pegs. Again, prints will be scanned onsite after drying and invited for inclusion in the public legacy artwork.

Please pack a lunch for this workshop.
