I was commissioned by the City of Richmond to create utility box wraps for the city’s public art program. In my research of Richmond’s photographic archives, I was drawn to the distinctive history of Lansdowne Park Racetrack. Captivated by the rich documentation of this once vibrant scene, I selected twelve vintage photographs to develop a shifting graphic concept that suggests movement and highlights the significant role horse-racing played at this site in the early 1900’s.
It’s important to note that horse racing was only one facet of the site’s history. Lansdowne Park Racetrack served as a versatile space with a multitude of uses over the years. From sporting events to community gatherings, it witnessed a rich array of activities. My artwork aims to honour this multifaceted past, celebrating not only the excitement of horse racing but also the broader cultural significance of the location.
The vibrancy of my work is designed to spark curiosity and pay homage to this unique aspect of local history. I chose a colourful palette and a modern aesthetic to complement the innovative architecture of the KPU Chip Wilson School of Design, which stands near this installation. My intention is to honour the technical fields of fashion, graphics, and interior design that are cultivated within the school, reflecting the creativity and dynamism that these disciplines represent.
