I was entrusted with a public art commission to create a historical and interactive artwork for the hotel’s lobby. The installation I designed is a composite of structural steel, timber, 3D components, archive photographs, seventeen custom frames, and three shadow boxes, each 6 inches deep.
My concept for the artwork emerged from a seven-month journey of extensive archive research, graciously facilitated by the Museum of Whistler. During this time, I discovered a kindred spirit—a Whistler Spirit—that has been shared by locals and visitors alike since the early 1900s. Despite the dramatic changes over time, this spirit has remained steadfast. This is what inspired the theme of my artwork. Each article and photo housed within the frames is a testament to a unique story. They honour the mountain-loving, free spirits who have been drawn to Whistler since the early twentieth century.
It is a tribute to those who have come before us and a celebration of the timeless allure that continues to draw people to this enchanting place.
