The figurative artwork depicts an industrialized shoreline in Vancouver British Columbia embodied within the female figure form. The artwork hopes to inspire environmental awareness for sustainability and finding balance of urban and nature in our world of a changing climate. Desiree Patterson exhibits her artwork in art shows in Vancouver, Los Angeles, Toronto and in New York. She is a Canadian contemporary visual artist and environmentalist.
Éveil Untitled ii, 36x36 inches, limited edition of 12This figurative artwork explores the relationship between humans and industrialized environments. The female form borders the embodiment of a local hydro damn, captured with a snowy setting. The obvious frustration demonstrated by the model’s body language is meant to represent the artist’s personal feelings towards the environment and how humans manage our wildspaces.

The model’s body-language illustrates the feeling of despair towards the endless exposure to media regarding the ongoing disputes of fossil fuel usage, the overwhelming need to act against global warming and the bold action world leaders must take to alter a destiny that has gained serious momentum. The common citizen is now aware of the effects of climate change—the greenhouse affect due to fossil fuel emissions—yet still feels helpless in transitioning to a lifestyle committed to reducing their carbon footprint.
Éveil Divided, 36x36 inches, diptych, limited edition of 12Éveil – Divided, represents the average eco-conscious individual, who finds themselves challenged with pursuing a sustainable lifestyle, while immersed in an urban environment. The paradox of wanting to preserve nature, yet continuing to consume resources and live an urban lifestyle—haunted by the consequences—is a dualistic inner struggle that millions face every day. The diptych structure of the piece divides the man into two—half embodying his life within the urban realm (Manhattan) and the other half—his internal connection to beauty and the natural world. The distinct line between represents the divided state that fosters inner conflict, while offering the opportunity for awareness to influence change.
