Unus cum Viribus Duorum

One with the Strength of Two

Unus cum Viribus Duorum comprises two monumental, site-specific sculptures exploring the relationship between individual and collective strength, civic identity, and community.

The title, drawn from the historical amalgamation of the Abbotsford and Matsqui police departments, provides a conceptual framework for two interconnected artworks realized through movement, materiality, language, and light.

The kinetic sculpture reinterprets the Abbotsford Police Department’s insignia through approximately 400 independently moving steel elements. Animated by wind and shifting light, the work reflects the adaptability, coordination, and collective strength central to policing.

The illuminated typographic sculpture emerged from a community engagement process involving Abbotsford Police Department members, civilian staff, and the broader community. Words and reflections gathered through these exchanges informed the artwork, giving physical form to qualities identified as essential to policing and public service.

Together, the sculptures establish a dialogue between institutional identity and the community it serves, articulating shared values through two distinct yet interconnected visual languages.
