Public art commission to create a historical and interactive artwork in the hotel’s lobby.
The installation consists of structural steel, timber, 3D components, archive photographs, seventeen custom frames and three (6” deep) shadow boxes.
The concept for the artwork was established during seven-months of extensive archive research (graciously facilitated by the Museum of Whistler), where I noticed a kindred spirit shared by the locals and visitors who’ve been drawn to this area since the early 1900s. Although times have changed dramatically—this Whistler Spirit endures.
It was this heartwarming contemplation that inspired the theme of the artwork. The article or photo in each frame symbolizes a unique story that honours the mountain-loving, free spirits who have been flocking to Whistler since the early twentieth century.
